Tapping Trees + Maine AG in the Classroom
The fifth grade students at Williams Elementary School have been linking their learning about matter with the maple syrup process. Mrs. Charest and Mrs. Pullen helped the students tap five trees right at Williams. They were able to drill the holes, tap in the spile, and attach the bucket and lid all by themselves. One student commented, “This is real life science!” Many students and staff commented how fast the buckets were filling and asking great questions like, “What makes the conditions ideal for syrup?” All fifth grade students also went home with a small container of maple syrup – courtesy of Pullen’s Sugar Shack!
Mrs. Charest and Mrs. Pullen welcomed Goodwill Hinckley and their Agriculture students to read “Farmer Eva’s Green Garden Life” by Jacqueline Briggs Martin and illustrated by Christy Hale. They also talked about farming and the germination of seeds. Each student went home with seeds to plant with their families! #WeAreRSU18 #WESproud18
