Meet Maggie Solis, Dean of Students at WES

Meet Maggie Solis, Dean of Students at Williams Elementary School!

What was your greatest memory from last school year?

I have to say my greatest memory from last school year was our first ever WES Rocks Talent Show! We had so many students from each grade level showcase their amazing talents in front of the entire school. We had students who sang, danced, showed off their favorite sports skills, magic tricks, and shared their favorite jokes. I think the best part of it was the way our audience supported all who were performing. I cannot wait for our show this year!

What’s your favorite thing to do over the summer?

My favorite thing to do over the summer is to simply slow down the pace of life and spend quality time with my family and friends. This summer we spent a lot of time in the pool, camping in Bar Harbor, and we took our first big cross country trip as a family to California to visit my childhood best friend and her husband. We had the best time! I also loved spending time in my gardens! My son, Rocco, loves to help harvest all of our cucumbers and zucchini!

Tell us about your family!

My husband, Tony, and I live in Belgrade with our two children and our 9 year old dog, Blue. We love to spend time with our family, traveling when we can, and spending time at our family’s camp near Sugarloaf. This summer Tony became the first Men’s Rugby Coach at Thomas College and runs his own business – Sun King Health and Fitness. My daughter, Maevia, is 7 years old and is going into second grade. Maevia loves dance, gymnastics, skiing, and being a Girl Scout! My son, Rocco, is 3 years old and loves dinosaurs, playing outside, and spending time with his family and friends. He is excited to start preschool this fall!

What is one thing you’d like to share with the students of your school building?

I am so excited to start another school year with all of our wonderful students and families! I hope they have all  had time to relax and enjoy the beautiful Maine summer we have had and that they are ready to join together to make it an absolutely amazing school year! I know that if we stick to our motto of “Work Hard & Be Nice” we will knock this school year out of the park!

I also would like to share with all of the students walking through our wonderful Williams doors that my door is always open and that if they ever need anything, even just a quiet space I will always be available to them. I want all of our students to know they are loved, supported, and valued the minute they walk into our doors. I hope they always feel as if their schoolhouse is their home away from home.

What is your favorite thing about being part of RSU 18?

My favorite thing about being a part of RSU 18 is the chance I have each and every year to give back to a community that gave me so much as a child growing up in the Oakland schools. I feel so fortunate that I was able to come back to RSU 18 and spend 12 years as a preK and kindergarten teacher, helping our youngest learners and their families begin their educational journey through our district and now as a third year administrator getting to impact students, families, and our school community in a whole new way!

If you weren’t involved in the profession of education, what would we find you doing?

It is hard to imagine not being in the profession of education but if I was not, you would absolutely find me as some type of interior designer or event planner. I absolutely LOVE decorating and creating new spaces, and I think it is so much fun to plan birthdays and celebrations for all to enjoy! I have also found a love for baking over the past couple years. I especially love decorating cakes! This past year I’ve especially enjoyed experimenting with sourdough! So perhaps I’d even dream of  having my own bakery.
