Making Butter

One of the third grade targets is learning about matter – what it is, the different physical properties of matter, and the different ways one can change matter. In Ms. Kinney’s class at Williams Elementary School, the students did an experiment which showed how matter can change from a liquid to a solid by making butter! Students were given a jar half filled with heavy whipping cream. Then they took turns in small groups shaking their jar forcing air into the cream which helped the fat molecules begin to separate from the liquid and start to bind together. The more they shook the cream, the more those fat molecules began to clump together to form a solid which was the butter. Once their butter was complete, each student got to try a little on a piece of bread. Some even flavored their butter with salt, cinnamon and sugar, or garlic. Students not only learned how matter can change, but they also were able to create a tasty treat! #WeAreRSU18 #WESproud18
